Throughout this course, there was a lot I learned about writing that I had never considered before. With every essay that I composed, there were skills I acquired that has really grown me as a writer. I now know how to truly express my voice when I write. As I went through this course, I really sharpened up my writing process and pre-writing strategies. As a result of this my writings have been much more smoothly than ever before. For each essay there was a different topic and sometimes a different audience. I learned how to adapt my writing depending on the purpose I was writing it. For example, in essay 1 I had two different audiences, students and parents. For each audience I had to make a different approach and touch on each topic differently. It was important to me to make sure that my audience would relate to what I was writing. Like in essay 3 when I discussed the topic of hook-up apps and feminism I used realistic situations that could easily be a reality to some of the readers in my audience and used real celebrities that people would know when I was talking about the question of feminism.
One of the most useful skills I developed from this course was the ability to use outside research to fulfill the needs for what I was assigned. For example, In Essay 2, I did additional research on fast food companies and gathered facts to support the points I was trying to get across when comparing to the KFC Double Down. To support my text I learned how to effectively quote and paraphrase from articles and other readings. I am also able to respond effectively to exactly what the assignment asks of me.
During this course I was able to sharpen up my writing process and and fill in the missing gaps that I had previously when trying to complete writing assignments. I learned how to choose a topic and what to do with the chosen topic. First I would brain storm on each topic and write down any ideas that came to mind. After that I would do some background research on each idea to gather facts and other information. Then I would outline exactly what I wanted to cover and the order I wanted to do it in. This was also helpful when revising other peoples drafts. In peer review activities I was able to read another peers writing and offer advice for what could be improved while also showing them what I liked about their writing.
Formatting in writing has always been one of my biggest strengths in writing. One of the best things about my writing is that I am able to separate each idea by paragraphs and smoothly transition between them. When I write my outlines, I have each point separated by what paragraph it will become. This has always helped me in writing organized essays. I also always work very diligently to make sure that I have the proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I read over my drafts several times to make sure that I fix all errors before submitting the assignment.
It has also been very helpful to know how to electronically enhance my writing experience. Using word processing programs is a great way I keep my writings looking professional and appeasing to my readers. I also use computers to submit and exchange writings for reviews and comments. Using electronics for writing has been extremely helpful to me.
ENGL 1000 has inspired me in writing and has taught me how to find my voice, and how express it to the intended audience. ENGL 1000 has taught me how to read and analyze other peoples writings, but more importantly has taught me how to effectively create my own. It has given me skills to be able to be successful in other courses and in everyday life. The skills I developed this semester will be skills I carry with me for the rest of my life. I now have confidence and know that I am prepared to move on to ENGL 1001.
